Psychiatry Manual 2012 Revision Stirring Debates

Friday, December 26th, 2008

The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) is currently being revised by panels of psychiatrists. According to a recent news article a number of areas are being debated for possible exclusion including binge eating, gender identity, and diagnoses of illnesses involving children.
The ramifications of these decisions will be far reaching. Doctors depend on this manual to make diagnoses. The manual provides the necessary diagnostic codes that insurers require for treatment reimbursement. Inclusion and exclusion of syndromes and diseases will also greatly impact research (including funding) and individuals’ psychological identity for years to come.

Academia.edu - A Social Network for Researchers

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

null
Academia.edu is a recent effort to create a Facebook-like social network specifically for researchers. Others include Graduate Junction and Labmeeting.

So far about 20,500 researchers from about 15 disciplines have set up profiles on the site. The site’s goal is enable one to find peers online with similar research interests.

Academia.edu does two things:

* It displays academics around the world in a tree format, according to what university/department they are affiliated with.
* It enables an academic to have an easy-to-maintain academic webpage. A sample page on Academia.edu is here: http://oxford.academia.edu/RichardPrice

The top of the page has links to Facebook, an Invite page which also allows one to search for colleagues on Academia.edu, and a Signup page.
One may browse by university or over 1,273 research interests.
The bottom of the page has links to FAQs, and a Bugs Link with meebo and email reporting options.
