January is Cervical Health Awareness Month

Monday, January 26th, 2009

According to the American Cancer Society (1)  cervical cancer is nearly 100 percent preventable, yet according to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 13,000 new cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed in 2002 and about 4,100 women will die of the disease. The good news is that cervical cancer is preventable and curable if it is detected early; in fact, the occurrence of deaths from cervical cancer has declined significantly over the last 20 to 30 years.

The National Cervical Caner Coalition Web site includes links to health news, local chapters, resources and patient information.

PubMed and CINAHL are also excellent tools for finding professional literature on this topic.
Below are links to the results to two “canned ” searches.
*[PubMed] — Medical review articles on drug therapies for uterine cancer (last 3 years, English language and humans)

*[CINAHL] (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health] —Nursing role for patients with cervical cancer

ILLiad: New and Improved Interlibrary Services

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

At the beginning of this week, the University Libraries moved to new interlibrary loan software, ILLiad, which will allow you to track your requests as well as keep a record of your past requests.  The first time you request a book or article using our online request forms, you will be asked to set up your account.  (When you set up your account, you will need your Rocket number. You can look it up at UTAD Account Management.)

From your account, you will be able to make your requests. Once you have an account set up, you’ll also be able to use the OLinks interlibrary request link to automatically enter the reference information into the request form.

To set up an account or to request an item (article, book, etc.), go to http://illiadvm00.utad.utoledo.edu/illiad/MCL/logon.html or use one of the links on the Mulford web page.

Due to the functionality of the system, we ask that all requests are made online.  For more information, contact Mulford Library Interlibrary Services at 419.383.3973.

Patient Safety Network - A National Patient Safety Resource

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Patient Safety Network (PSNet) is a national web-based resource featuring the latest news and essential resources on patient safety. It is sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), a division of the US Dept of Health and Human Services.

The site offers weekly updates of patient safety literature, news, tools, and meetings (”What’s New”), and a vast set of carefully annotated links to important research and other information on patient safety (”The Collection”).

The resources come in a variety of formats, including literature, research, tools, and Web sites.
The set of selected “Classics” includes review articles, empirical studies, reports, and books that are selected because of special relevance.

AHRQ PSNet provides powerful searching and browsing capability, as well as the ability for diverse users to customize the site around their interests (My PSNet). It also is tightly coupled with AHRQ WebM&M, a monthly journal that features user-submitted cases of medical errors, expert commentaries, and perspectives on patient safety.

Cleaning Out Our Closets!

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Actually, not our closets but our circulating book collection (on the fifth floor), with the same result: it’ll be easier to find the good, relevant items. This is especially important for academic health science libraries like Mulford: we need to make sure that you have easy access to the most current basic science and clinical information.  You don’t want to learn material that could be out-of-date.

So where are so many of the books going?  Some books are being discarded because other UT and OhioLINK libraries have copies, but most of the books are being sent to the Northwest Ohio Regional Depository.  In all cases, you will still be able to find the books in the UT or OhioLINK catalogs, and we can get a copy of the book for you within three business days in most cases.  So if you need Structure and Ultrastructure of Micro-organisms: An Introduction to a Comparative Substructural Anatomy of Cellular Organization (1963), we can get it for you!

Nursing Information Portal

Monday, January 5th, 2009

It’s the start of a new semester, and chances are you’ll need to do some research soon.

Looking for specific nursing information, but unsure of where to go? Check out the Mulford Library’s new Nursing Information Portal. This portal is designed to be a “one stop shop” for nursing resources available at Mulford.

The entire nursing community at the Health Science Campus is encouraged to utilize the portal, including UTMC staff nurses and College of Nursing students, faculty and staff. Nursing-specific information can be found via the following portal links:

  • Nursing Databases
  • Electronic Resources
  • Finding Evidence-Based Nursing Information
  • In addition, there is a section covering College of Nursing Course-Related Information. This section provides relevant links to instructional materials for nursing courses in which Mulford librarians have guest lectured.

If you have any comments or suggestions regarding the Nursing Information Portal, please contact the College of Nursing Librarian, Jodi Jameson, at 419-383-5152 or jodi.jameson@utoledo.edu . The portal is still in its early stages, and Jodi welcomes any insights or suggestions on how it can be improved to meet the needs of the nursing community.
